Key Scripture:

Psalm 119:105“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Introduction:

The Bible is God’s Word to you—a guide for life, faith, and hope. As a new believer, you might wonder how to start reading it and make sense of what it says. This lesson will help you take the first steps.

Tips for Reading and Understanding the Bible:

1. Choose a Simple Bible Translation

  • Start with easy-to-understand versions like the NIV (New International Version), ESV (English Standard Version), or NLT (New Living Translation).

  • If your first language isn’t English, use a Bible in your heart language.

2. Begin with the Gospels

  • Start reading the life of Jesus in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  • These show who Jesus is and what He did for you.

3. Read Small Portions Daily

  • Don’t try to read the whole Bible at once.

  • Start with a few verses or a chapter per day.

4. Ask God to Help You Understand

  • Pray before reading, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you.

  • God promises to help those who seek Him.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God…” (James 1:5)

5. Use Study Tools

  • Use simple study guides, devotionals, or apps to explain difficult parts.

  • S.T.A.D Digital Ministry offers resources to help you!

6. Write Notes and Questions

  • Keep a journal of what you learn and any questions you have.

  • Discuss these with mature believers or leaders.

How to Reflect on What You Read:

  • What does this passage tell me about God?

  • What does it teach about Jesus?

  • Is there a command or promise for me?

  • How can I apply this in my daily life?

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which Bible book will you start reading this week?

  2. What time of day is best for you to read the Bible regularly?

  3. How will you ask God to help you understand His Word?

  4. Who can you ask for help if you have questions about the Bible?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank You for giving me Your Word. Help me to understand it clearly and to apply it to my life. Open my heart and mind as I read, and guide me by Your Spirit. Teach me to love Your Word more each day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
