Lesson 2: Learning to Hear God’s Voice
Foundational Study for New Believers – S.T.A.D Digital Ministry
www.staddigitalministry.com
Key Scripture:
John 10:27 – “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”
Introduction:
As a new believer, you might wonder, “How do I hear God’s voice?”
The good news is: God speaks. And even better—He wants you to hear Him. Hearing God's voice is not just for pastors or prophets; it is for every child of God. Including you.
How Does God Speak?
God speaks in many ways, but here are some of the most common:
1. 📖 Through the Bible (His Written Word)
The Bible is God’s primary way of speaking to us today.
Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is alive and active…”
2. 🕊️ Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit lives inside you and brings God's Word to life.
He may guide you with peace, conviction, or direction.
Romans 8:14 – “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
3. ✝️ Through Peace and Promptings
Sometimes, God leads through an inner knowing or a strong sense of peace (or unrest).
Colossians 3:15 – “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…”
4. 🗣️ Through Others
God may speak through sermons, Christian friends, mentors, or even unexpected conversations.
Always test these words against Scripture.
Developing a Listening Ear
✔️ Spend Quiet Time Daily
Set aside a quiet time each day to read the Bible, pray, and listen. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you through His Word.
✔️ Write Down Impressions
Keep a spiritual journal. Write verses that stand out, thoughts you sense during prayer, or dreams that might have spiritual significance.
✔️ Obey What You Hear
God speaks more to those who listen and obey.
Luke 11:28 – “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
Practical Tips to Discern God's Voice:
🛑 God’s voice will never contradict Scripture.
❤️ It will always reflect His love, grace, and holiness.
🕊️ His voice brings peace, not confusion or fear.
Reflection Questions:
Have you ever felt God speaking to your heart? What was it like?
What distracts you from listening to God?
How can you create a more focused and quiet time to hear from Him?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You are a speaking God. I want to know Your voice and follow You. Help me to be still, to recognize Your whisper, and to obey what You say. Thank You for the Holy Spirit, who guides me into truth. I choose to trust Your Word as my foundation. Speak, Lord—Your servant is listening. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
